Car-Centricity Held Over Okinawa, Japan //

Even though it has been over 50 years since Okinawa, Japan was under American administration. The urban planning decisions from that time have all but gone away. The island’s urban form is more US than Japan. In the 60’s, while the rest of Japan was publicly investing into efficient intercity passenger rail and the Shinkansen 🚅 Okinawa was left to American urban planners of the time and the car. Now only the monorail is left in terms of passenger rail and Okinawa is the only Japanese prefecture to enjoy a gas tax cut and car traffic plagues the island. 🚗 #transport #rail #okinawa #japan
